10/19/10 9:27 PM
After four weeks of domination by underdog teams in the NFL, favorites were finally able to come out on top in week 6. Still, it was only a slight edge for the favorites. Underdogs went 6-7-1 against the spread after posting a 39-20-1 ATS mark over the previous four weeks. Here are some of the highlights from week 6's slate:
Vikings hold off Cowboys in battle of desperate teams
The underdog trend continued in the nine early games on Sunday. Favorites went 3-5-1 ATS in the nine contests. The biggest surprise came in St. Louis as the San Diego Chargers were upset by the Rams. Despite being an 8.5-point favorite, the disappointing Chargers lost by a final of 20-17. All four of San Diego's losses this season have come on the road against teams that combined to post a record of 15-49 in 2009.
The other significant upset took place in Chicago. The Bears came up short in a 23-20 setback against the Seattle Seahawks as a 6-point choice. The Miami Dolphins were the only other underdog club to win straight up in week 6. Miami pulled out a 23-20 win at Green Bay as a field goal underdog. In losing efforts, the Chiefs and Lions were also able to cover in the early games as underdogs.
In the marquee matchup in week 6, the New England Patriots rallied for a 23-20 overtime victory at home against the Baltimore Ravens. The game ended in a push for bettors as the Pats were favored by a field goal.
In Pittsburgh, the Steelers were able to cover in Ben Roethlisberger's season debut. His touchdown pass with 1:25 to play enabled Pittsburgh to cover in a 28-10 win at Heinz Field over the Cleveland Browns as a 14-point choice. In the late kicks on Sunday afternoon, all three favorites came from behind to barely cover.
In a battle of 1-3 clubs at the Metrodome, the Minnesota Vikings rallied from a 14-7 halftime deficit to stop the Dallas Cowboys by a final of 24-21 as 1.5-point choice. At Denver, a late pass interference call against the Broncos helped the New York Jets secure a 24-20 victory as a 3.5-point favorite.
In a Bay Area matchup, the 0-5 San Francisco 49ers trailed at halftime against the Oakland Raiders before coming away with a 17-9 victory as 7.5-point favorite. The underdog Washington Redskins were able to cover in the Sunday night game. The Indianapolis Colts pulled out a 27-24 win as a 3.5-point favorite.?
