Football Betting News: 2011 NFL Draft Props Recap - Part One
05/05/11 9:42 PM
While many things went as expected in Thursday's opening round of the 2011 NFL Draft, there were also several moves that took many football analysts and bettors by surprise. Here's a recap on some of the prop wagers that were available for this year's draft:
Number of Quarterbacks selected in Round One (Ov/Un: 3.5, Result: 4-OV)
As expected, three quarterbacks were taken in the early stages of the opening round. Carolina grabbed Auburn's Cam Newton to open this year's draft. With the eighth selection, the Tennessee Titans tabbed Washington's Jake Locker. Two picks later, Jacksonville took Blaine Gabbert of Missouri. The last quarterback to be taken in the first round was a bit of a surprise. While the Minnesota Vikings are in the need for a signal-caller, most analysts were not expecting the club to pick Florida State's Christian Ponder at the 12th spot in the opening round. Potential first-round choice Andy Dalton of TCU was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals with the third pick of the second round.
Number of Running Backs selected in Round One (Ov/Un: 0.5, Result 1-OV)
For just the second time in the last three decades, only one running back was chosen in the first round of the NFL Draft. After swinging a deal with the New England Patriots, the New Orleans Saints took Alabama's Mark Ingram with the 28th choice in the first round. Among the top 55 overall picks in the draft, there were just a pair of running backs. With the sixth pick in round two, the Arizona Cardinals grabbed Ryan Williams of Virginia Tech.
Number of Wide Receivers and Tight Ends selected in Round One (Ov/Un: 2.5, Result 3-OV)
Like the running back prop bet, the outcome for this wager wasn't decided until late in the first round. As expected, star SEC wide receivers A.J. Green and Julio Jones went off the board early. With the fourth pick, the Bengals selected Georgia's Green while the Atlanta Falcons worked a deal with Cleveland to move up to the sixth spot for the purpose of securing Alabama's Jones. At the 26th position of the opening round, the Kansas City Chiefs grabbed Pittsburgh wideout Jonathan Baldwin. In the end, no tight ends were selected in the first round. Kyle Rudolph of Notre Dame became the first tight end to be chosen as Minnesota picked him with the 11th selection of the second round.
