Baseball Betting: A look at some more 2010 MLB season long props

02/24/10 7:23 PM

We have previously discussed some season long hitting props for the 2010 Major League Baseball campaign. Now, the focus will be on pitching. Here's a look at some more of the general season long props for the year. Highest Win Total for MLB Pitcher: (ov/un 20.5) In an era marked by conservative pitch counts for most starting pitchers, the ability to win 20 games in a season is far more difficult than in the past. In three of the last four years, the MLB leader in wins has had less than 21 victories. Last season, no pitcher was able to reach the 20-win plateau. Highest Loss Total for MLB Pitcher: (ov/un 17.5) This category can provide some interesting results. It can be difficult at times to get an over in this prop because some of the real bad pitchers can't stay in the rotation long enough to amass a huge amount of defeats. Over the last 29 seasons, only one pitcher has lost 20 or more games in a season. In each of the last two seasons, the most defeats by an individual pitcher has been 17. Highest Save Total for MLB Pitcher: (ov/un 47.5) While starting pitchers have faced more restrictions, closers at the back of bullpens are still getting plenty of chances to rack up some huge save totals. In 2008, Francisco Rodriguez of the Los Angeles Angels shattered the single-season saves record with 62. Last year, Angels closer Brian Fuentes led the majors with 48 saves. From 2005-07, the top save total in each campaign was 47. So, the 47.5 number has been in the range of the top number more often than not in recent years. Highest Strikeout Total for MLB Pitcher: (ov/un 259.5) The pitch count restrictions for starting pitchers has also played a role in this category. Over the last five years, no pitcher in the majors has been able to strikeout at least 270 batters in a season. From 2005-07, no pitcher was able to exceed 245 strikeouts. The emergence of San Francisco Giants hurler Tim Lincecum has helped to increase these numbers over the last couple of years. He has recorded more than 260 strikeouts in each of the last two campaigns. In 2009, Detroit Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander led the majors with 269 strikeouts.
