10/19/10 9:32 PM
In each of the last two weeks, the top-ranked team in the nation has gone down to defeat. The new number-one club heading into this week isn't expected to meet a similar fate. Here's a look at some of the top games that are coming up on the week 8 slate:
Ducks move into top spot
After Alabama and Ohio State were knocked off in the last two Saturdays, the Oregon Ducks have moved into the top ranking in this week's AP Top 25 poll. The Ducks will kickoff the week 8 schedule on Thursday night in Eugene against the UCLA Bruins. Oregon is a 24-point favorite in the Pac-10 matchup.
While the Ducks lead the AP rankings, the Oklahoma Sooners are the top team in the first BCS standings of the year. In the AP poll, Oklahoma is ranked second. In a tough challenge on Saturday, the #2 Sooners will head to Columbia to face #18 Missouri in a battle of Big 12 unbeatens. Oklahoma is a narrow field choice in the contest.
Saturday's other matchup of undefeated squads will take place in the SEC. In a clash of the Tigers, 5th-ranked Auburn will welcome #6 LSU. Auburn is a 6-point favorite in the SEC West affair. There are a couple of other top 20 showdowns on Saturday's slate.
In Stillwater, the 17th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys will attempt to stay perfect against #14 Nebraska. Following last Saturday's disappointment against Texas, the Cornhuskers are a 5.5-point choice this week.
In the Big 10, #10 Wisconsin will try to avoid a letdown at Iowa against the 13th-ranked Hawkeyes. In a hostile environment, the Badgers are a 6-point underdog. While a couple of top 5 teams are slight favorites on Saturday, #4 TCU is an 18.5-point home choice over the Air Force Falcons. With Auburn or LSU set to go down this week, #7 Alabama has a chance to move up in the rankings. The Crimson Tide have been installed as a 16.5-point favorite for its rivalry matchup at Tennessee.
After Ohio State's setback last week, the 8th-ranked Michigan State Spartans are the last undefeated club in the Big 10. Michigan State is expected to have a tough time on Saturday at Northwestern. The Spartans are a 5-point favorite in the game. Rounding out the top 10, #9 Utah is a 30-point choice against visiting Colorado St
